MIFARE DESFire EV2 – Fast, Innovative and Reliable

MIFARE DESFire EV2 is the newest addition to NXP’s popular contactless chip family. It is a fast, innovative and reliable IC that provides a secure, scalable solution for access control, identity, transportation and closed-loop micropayments.

Compared to the older EV1, EV2 has enhanced features such as Proximity Check, Mutual Three Pass authentication and Staggered Key management. It can also store more applications in the same memory space thanks to its MIsmartApp feature.

Enhanced security

In a world of security breaches and data leaks, it’s no surprise that many universities are looking for more secure solutions. Increasingly, the old magnetic stripe and proximity cards are being replaced by newer, more sophisticated technology that offers better protection.

The MIFARE DESFire family is the answer for those who want the convenience and flexibility of a single card to manage both access and payment applications. DESFire cards use 128-bit AES data encryption to protect the chip and its contents from unauthorized access, and have built-in protections against cloning and tampering.

DESFire EV2 offers several additional features to ensure enhanced security. Its Proximity Check feature is designed to help prevent relay attacks, while the Virtual Smart Card architecture anticipates future needs for privacy protection. In addition, the DESFire EV2 is Common Criteria EAL5+ security certified, which is the same level of certification required for chips used in banking and e-passports.

The DESFire EV2 chip is also more flexible than its predecessor, allowing for up to 28 different applications with 32 files each. It also has a flexible memory organisation structure, mutual three-pass authentication and an automatic anti-tear mechanism that guarantees transaction-oriented data integrity. These features are key to ensuring the safety of sensitive information stored on the card. This includes credit card information, loyalty points, and digitized IDs.

Enhanced performance

The MIFARE DESFire EV2 silicon solution is consumer friendly and provides a great balance between performance and cost-efficiency. It offers a longer operating distance and faster transaction speed than its predecessors, while providing a robust set of features for secure transactions that help mitigate man-in-the-middle attacks. It uses a DES, 2K3DES or 3K3DES hardware cryptographic engine to protect transmission data.

Its open concept also allows for the seamless integration of other ticketing media such as smart paper tickets, banking convergence cards and mobile ticketing based on NFC technology. With innovative features such as MIsmartApp, Delegated Key Management system and Transaction MAC, the EV2 can be used to mifare desfire 4k create multiapplication schemes that enable new business models for Smart City services such as public transport, parking, city tours and citizen services.

The EV2 can store multiple applications and data files in its memory. Enhanced multi-application support

MIFARE DESFire EV2 is a contactless IC that is designed with system operators and solution developers in mind to allow them to build interoperable and scalable contactless solutions for identity, access control, loyalty and micro-payment applications. The IC is certified with EAL5+ security, providing the same level of protection as the chips found in e-passports and banking cards. It also complies with global open standards for air interface and cryptographic methods. In addition, it offers a number of enhanced features such as MIsmartApp with multiple key sets and Transaction MAC which support the development of new business models.

Mifare DESFire EV2 cards are convenient and flexible, offering reliability and security along with increased transfer rates and consumer-friendly design. They can hold as many different applications as their memory size supports and new applications can be loaded even after the card is already in circulation. A purse can be shared across applications to further increase interoperability.

The MIFARE DESFire EV2 chip can be programmed to support up to 1 million read/write cycles, much more than previous versions of the IC. It is also backwards compatible, so if you have already installed an MIFARE DESFire EV1 system, your readers can be upgraded to read EV2 chips.

The DESFire EV2 contactless IC is perfect for solution providers and system operators that need an extremely reliable, interoperable and scalable contactless solution for multi-application cards. It can be used for identity, access control, loyalty and logical access control applications, as well as for closed-loop payment at vending machines.

It supports all existing commands from MIFARE DESFire EV1 and can be extended with new features such as a new Transaction Timer, Secure Dynamic Messaging and a rolling key set to protect against man-in-the-middle attacks.
